Tailoring your résumé per job — without starting over every time

"Tailor your résumé to every job" is good advice that most people ignore, and for a rational reason: done by hand, it means re-reading the posting, hunting for the right keywords, rewriting bullets, and re-checking formatting — twenty minutes to an hour, per application. Nobody sustains that across fifty applications.

The fix is not to tailor less. It is to change the workflow so tailoring is cheap.

Keep one strong base résumé

Start from a single, honest, well-written base résumé — your real experience, strong bullets, consistent formatting. This is the source of truth you maintain. You are never rewriting it from scratch; you are producing per-job variants from it.

Adapt, don't rewrite

For a given posting, tailoring is mostly three small moves:

  1. Lead with the relevant. Reorder so the experience this job cares about is near the top.
  2. Match the vocabulary. Where the posting uses a specific term for something you have done, use that term (see our post on ATS keyword matching).
  3. Trim the irrelevant. Cut or shrink the bullets that don't serve this role.

None of that changes what is true about you. It changes emphasis and phrasing so the fit is legible to both the ATS and the human who reads next.
